Music at Heygarth

The power of music - Our Vision

Music is all around us. It is the soundtrack to our lives. Music connects us through people and places in our ever-changing world. It is creative, collaborative, celebratory and challenging. We hope that music at Heygarth can bring communities together through the shared endeavours of whole-school singing, ensemble playing, experimenting with the creative process and, through the love of listening to friends and fellow pupils, performing. The sheer joy of music making can feed the soul of a school community, enriching each student while strengthening the shared bonds of support and trust which make a great school.

We foster a love of music through regular music lessons, events throughout the year, Musician of the month, encouraging instrumental lessons and choir every Tuesday after school!

Music Rationale

At Heygarth, we have chosen to create a blend of resources for the study of music for years 1-6. We primarily use Charanga, as this scheme is very easy for teachers to use, however is easy to adapt to the specific needs of each class, and build on knowledge formed with each sequential year. Supplementary to this, we also use BBC Ten Pieces to add variety and opportunities for the children to create their own music based around different styles. These schemes align to the National Curriculum and the Model Music Curriculum. The children are supported through their learning by videos and the classroom teacher. This adaptable scheme will allow us to change and mould each lesson to the needs and wants of each class, allowing for a unique and beneficial learning experience, which in turn will improve how children view music.

The use of a high-quality online material supports teachers, ensuring they deliver progressive lessons. These online resources offer help, giving clarification on assessment, variation and a guide to what resources need to be used to support learning. The online tool also supports parents with videos and information they can use to support their child’s learning at home.

In addition to this, Children in Years 3, 4 and 5 will have the opportunity for external teaching of the Ukulele, with some musical theory, for a term each.
