‘Leo and the Gorgon’s Curse’ by Joe Todd Stanton
Join Leo as he takes on mythical creatures from ancient Greece. In the city of Athens, where danger looms outside the walls and Athena keeps guard over her people, can aspiring hero Leo ever achieve the fame and glory he dreams of? Even if the only way to earn it might be going against the Brownstone motto - and his parent’s wishes…
English
We will be concentrating on extending vocabulary and varying sentence structures within our writing. We will also be writing informal letters and diary entries. We will be taking part in discussions and debates and we will be writing descriptive narratives.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, we will cover Numbers to 10,000, Counting in Different Intervals, Comparing and Ordering Numbers, Investigating Number Patterns and Rounding and Estimating. We will also working on our fluency of the times tables up to 12 and quick recall of number bonds and number facts.
Science
In science, we will be learning all about States of Matter. We will be looking at the properties of solids, liquids and gases and how and why the change states. We will be learning about the water cycle and it’s founder, Bernard Palissey.
Physical Education
Elm and Birch have P.E. on Tuesday & Thursday
Tuesday - Outdoor P.E. (Sport Around the World)
Thursday - Outdoor P.E. (Rounders)
Curriculum
This half term our curriculum question will be, ‘Who were the Ancient Greeks?’
We will be learning about the 4 legacies of the Ancient Greeks: Democracy, Olympics, Buildings and Theatre. We will also be learning about Greek gods and goddesses, stories portrayed on Greek vases as well as making our own vases, looking at primary and secondary sources and looking at different city states, in particular Athens and Sparta. We will be locating Greece on a world map and looking at how the topography of Greece influenced life.
Homework
Both English and Mathematics homework will be set every Friday. Homework will be set on Century and the children will have to complete it by the following Wednesday.
Children will be given 6 orange words (during RWInc Spelling lessons) which they will write in their spelling books. They will be practicing these in school and at home, before being tested on them. Children will be expected to go on-line and complete ‘Times Table Rockstars’. Every child has their own log in.
All pupils in year 4 will have two reading books: a school reading book especially catered to their reading ability and level and a reading for pleasure book. Pupils will need to bring in both reading books and their personal reading log to school every day.
